Chilean humanitarian flight takes off to Israel, one Chilean kidnapped

A flight has brought Chileans who were trapped in Israel, from the war-torn country to Greece. Meanwhile, the family of a Chilean who was kidnapped near the Gaza border continues to look for information about her whereabouts. Government officials have spoken with the family.

The air force has sent an aircraft to Israel to bring back Chileans who want to leave the country in the wake of the war unfolding with Hamas. More flights could follow, as the aircraft has only room for some 100 people. “We will make all the necessary flights to get all Chileans out,” Air Brigadier General Andrés Leiva told CNN Chile. The exact number of Chileans in Israel, a popular holiday destination for South Americans, remains unknown.

Authorities have been unable to locate Loren Garcovich, a Chilean citizen abducted by Hamas near the Gaza border. Foreign Minister Alberto Van Klaveren contacted the Garcovich family, he said on social media, confirming Loren was abducted by Hamas shortly after the group launched a terrorist attack on Saturday.

Loren’s father, Danny, told public broadcaster TVN that he was with his daughter in a kibbutz when the attack started. “There was intensive shelling, missiles from everywhere. Then, a large number of terrorists entered,” he said. He lost contact with his daughter when Hamas fighters cut telecommunication lines.

Garcovich said his daughter has probably been abducted to Gaza to be swapped with Palestinian prisoners held in Israel. “We are trying to see what can be done diplomatically and through the International Red Cross,” he said.
